Mimosas vs. Bellinis- Your Guide to the Perfect Breakfast Cocktail

Mimosas vs Bellini's

When it comes to morning-friendly cocktails, there are few that can compare to the Mimosa and the Bellini. Both of these sweet morning drinks use champagne or sparkling wine to the mix to bring a unique, bubbly flavor to the mix. While these two cocktails share some similarities, they also have some key differences that makes them each unique. So, which side of the morning cocktail debate do you fall on—Mimosas or Bellinis?

Here is your basic guide to both drinks and what you can expect when it comes to ordering either of these cocktails on your next outing.

The Mimosa

Mimosas are one of the most popular breakfast cocktails out there and are a surefire way to enjoy a little champagne in the morning. Traditionally Mimosas are just made of orange juice and champagne, but there are a few variations on the cocktail as well. Other sparkling wines such as Prosecco are sometimes used in Mimosas and flavored orange juices such as tangerine orange blends are also sometimes used in these cocktails.

If you want to add a little extra sweetness and a little extra alcohol to the drink, then ½ oz of Triple Sec can also be introduced into this cocktail. Mimosas should be served chilled and in a champagne flute. The key to serving a Mimosa is keeping the glass cold to help keep the temperature of the cocktail down. This is why some bartenders will chill the glass before hand.

Belini

The Bellini

The Bellini is similar to the Mimosa and was actually named after a 15th century artist by the name Giovanni Bellini. This cocktail is made with Prosecco or a similar dry sparkling wine and white peach puree. The mix should be two parts wine to one part peach puree. If you want to add some more flavor to your Bellini, then you can also add ½ oz Peach Schnapps and ¼ oz lemon juice to the mixture.

Sometimes, fresh peach puree is hard to come by, so alternatives or mixes can also be used. Just like Mimosas, Bellinis should be served chilled and in a champagne fruit or a thin-lipped tumbler or wine glass. Once again, keeping the temperature of the beverage down. However, many Bellinis are also made with frozen peach puree, it is typically easier to keep the drink cold.

With both drinks, the traditional approach to the cocktail is always a safe bet, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t new and fun renditions on each cocktail, including specialty flavored versions of both drinks. Think Cranberry Orange Mimosas or Pear Pomegranate Bellinis—the options are truly endless.

Next time you want something sweet and delicious for your morning brunch outing, consider one of these two iconic drinks as they are sure to fit the bill. Whether you prefer the citrusy flavor of a Mimosa or the peach taste of a Bellini, these sparkling cocktails are sure to please no matter which is your favorite.
