Sink Your Teeth into Bottiglia for National Pasta Day
If there’s one food that’s loved the world over and worthy of being honored with it’s own special holiday, it’s pasta. Pasta is one the most beloved foods around the world, taking a starring role on dinner tables for generations. You’re not likely to find a shortage of opinions on which pasta dish is the best, but one thing is for certain – we love our pasta, and we can’t wait to celebrate it on National Pasta Day.
The History of Pasta
Ok, it seems like there’s a holiday for everything these days but that really just means there are more opportunities to celebrate our favorite things, and pasta is so loved around the globe, we couldn’t think of a more deserving food to honor. Each year we take a day to celebrate this treasured comfort food, and this year that day falls on October 17th.
Pasta is truly amazing. There are over 600 known varieties of pasta, each with its own unique shape and texture. With a history that dates back centuries, there has been plenty of time for cultures around the world to make a few adaptations and create pasta dishes that are uniquely their own.
Speaking of the history of pasta, where did this comfort food staple really come from? Today, pasta is strongly associated with various regions of Italy, however there are rumors that say Marco Pollo brought pasta back from his journeys to China. So, what’s the real scoop?
Well, there might be some truth to Marco Pollo encountering pasta in China, but there’s also some evidence that indicates pasta was enjoyed throughout Italy and other regions of the world long before that, with references made by the Roman Cicero about his passion for long, flat sheets of pasta called laganum or laganas. It doesn’t take much of a stretch of the imagination to translate what he was referring to into one of every Italian grandmother’s favorite pasta dishes – lasagna.
The reality is that the base of pasta is nothing more than some ground grain, which has been around since the beginning of time as we know it. We can really only speculate on when and where pasta was created and might be surprised to learn it dates backs further than we could ever imagine.
